FINANCIAL IMPACT

Approval of this item will not result in the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost) as the agreement with Southland Farmers’ Market Association, Inc. (Association) is non-financial in nature.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The Agreement will allow the Association to operate a weekly certified farmers’ market held on the Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) campus. The farmers’ market makes fresh nutritious produce available to ARMC patients, staff and visitors. Founded in 1983, the Association has grown to represent more than 400 growers in Southern California, providing customers fresh produce directly from local California farmers.

The Association has operated the certified farmers’ market at ARMC since 2014 and is responsible for securing permits and licenses, providing insurance coverage, recruiting growers, and covering the costs associated with operating the farmer’s market.

On March 25, 2014 (Item No. 9), the Board of Supervisors (Board) approved non-financial Agreement No. 14-145 with the Association for the operation of a weekly certified farmers’ market on the ARMC campus for the period of March 25, 2014 through March 24, 2015.

On March 3, 2015 (Item No. 11), the Board approved non-financial Agreement No. 15-114 with the Association for the period of March 25, 2015 through March 24, 2016.

On February 9, 2016 (Item No. 5), the Board approved Agreement No. 16-64 with the Association for the period of March 25, 2016 through March 24, 2017.

On February 14, 2017 (Item No. 9), the Board approved a non-financial Agreement No. 17-77 with the Association for the period of March 25, 2017 through March 24, 2018.

On March 13, 2018 (Item No. 10), the Board approved non-financial Agreement No. 18-104 with the Association for the period of March 25, 2018 through March 24, 2019.

On October 16, 2018 (Item No. 10), the Board of Supervisors approved Agreement No. 18-778 with the Association for the period of March 15, 2019 through March 24, 2024.

ARMC recommends approval of the Agreement, to continue to support the County’s goal of providing for the safety and health of County residents through access to fresh and nutritious produce.
