BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Through the student internship program, the Department of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) provides students enrolled in the Counseling and Social Work Program at Grand Canyon University (GCU) with the opportunity to work alongside qualified DAAS professional staff to support field experience and training. Integration of classroom learning with agency-based practices allows students to gain valuable insight into the benefits and challenges of organizational operations and diverse client populations. The internship program serves as an opportunity to lead students to a personal understanding of the responsibilities and rewards of professional social work while training future professionals within the county.

On March 11, 2025 (Item No. 4), the Board of Supervisors approved non-financial Contract No. 25-143 (Contract) with GCU to provide field experience and student training in counseling and social work for the contract period of March 11, 2025, through March 10, 2026.

Approval of this item will allow DAAS to extend the term of the Contract for an additional year and continue to host student interns from GCU. The Contract between DAAS and GCU is mutually beneficial. It offers students hands-on training with the aging population while preparing for future employment in this important and growing field.
