FINANCIAL IMPACT

Approval of this item will not result in the use of additional Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost). The estimated annual cost will be funded by the current Discretionary General Funding allocation with the Department of Public Health (DPH) Animal Care Division. Adequate appropriation and revenue have been included in the 2024-25 DPH budget and will be included in future recommended budgets.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

The recommended positions for Health Education Specialist I (Rescue Coordinator) will work directly with individual rescue groups to better streamline adoptions and shelter processes, perform a variety of functions throughout the Animal Care Division, including the development and implementation of outreach strategies to increase the visibility and success of general adoption, and work with DPH leadership, rescue groups, and other stakeholders on developing an expanded media campaign to better communicate with the public.

Staff will participate in community events and events hosted by rescue groups, educate the public about the benefits of adopting animals and the various shelter programs offered through the Animal Care Division. Lastly, the new positions will provide additional support to DPH’s animal shelters in Devore and Big Bear, as well as the contracted Apple Valley Animal Shelter.

DPH recommends approval of the two Rescue Coordinator positions to meet the growing demands of the Animal Care Division and to improve the well-being of animals in need.
