FINANCIAL IMPACT
This item will not result in the use of additional Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost) as this letter is non-financial in nature. There is no cost associated with the registration of a second-level domain name with the .Gov Program.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
In an effort to improve services, increase resiliency, facilitate business continuity, and reduce costs, the Assessor-Recorder-County Clerk Department (ARC) is migrating its infrastructure to the Cloud (i.e., Azure, Office365) and continuing with development of a new Assessor Information Management System (AIMS). These two efforts have positioned ARC to consider and plan for the domain name (i.e., .gov, .org, .com, etc.) that will be used by ARC moving forward. Obtaining either the SBCountyARC.gov or ARCSBCounty.gov domain will provide for comprehensive administration over ARC’s domain, which is required for the progression of ARC’s Cloud adoption strategy.
The .Gov Program is part of the United States General Services Administration. A .gov domain is used for online services like websites or e-mail, and it conveys a greater sense of trust and recognition than its counterparts like .com, .org, or .us. Government agencies can easily be identified as official with the use of a .gov domain, so the public will not have to guess whether the website they are on or the e-mail they received in their inbox is genuine. Adopting a .gov domain name (instead of .org, .com, etc.) provides a multitude of robust security protections to mitigate cyberattacks consistent with industry standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology and Federal information security management practices. Creation of a new .gov domain name will not result in any negative technical or policy ramifications.
Execution of the recommended letter will allow ARC to request a domain name with the .Gov Program and improve County government operations by securing a domain name that can be verified and trusted by the public and will facilitate the progression of moving to the Cloud.
