BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The recommended Affiliation Agreement with SBCCD will allow students enrolled in San Bernardino Valley College’s Psychiatric Technology Program to obtain clinical training and experience at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC). The Psychiatric Technology Program at San Bernardino Valley College prepares students to take the California Psychiatric Technician licensing examination and become psychiatric technicians. County departments with in-patient Behavioral Health units, including ARMC, employ psychiatric technicians. Providing clinical sites for student training has been shown to be an effective way to recruit potential employees.
A key component of ARMC’s mission is to provide education to students in a variety of disciplines. ARMC has a number of affiliation agreements with universities and colleges, and technical and trade schools to provide on-site clinical training for students. This clinical training is necessary for students to ensure they have the requisite experience to obtain their degrees, licenses, and/or certifications.
The volume and patient mix at ARMC provide a comprehensive educational opportunity to students from San Bernadino Valley College. This affiliation agreement ensures students receive specialty clinical training and experience, and gain vital skills needed in developing a competent workforce. The affiliation agreement provides for the safety, health, and social service needs of County residents by ensuring the delivery of specialized medical care to ARMC patients, as well as increasing the future pool of psychiatric technician candidates for the hospital.
On September 13, 2016 (Item No. 12), the Board of Supervisors approved Non-Financial Affiliation Agreement No. 16-724 with SBCCD to provide psychiatric technician students with clinical experience at ARMC for the period of September 13, 2016, through September 12, 2021.
