FINANCIAL IMPACT

Approval of this item will not result in the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost) as the Affiliation Agreement for Graduate Medical Education with Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is non-financial in nature.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

This Amendment No. 1 (Amendment) to the Agreement provides and will enable Arrowhead Regional Medical Center (ARMC) anesthesiology resident physicians to participate in a rotation at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) in pediatric anesthesiology. It allows ARMC to continue to provide a well-rounded education program for its resident physicians and to collaborate with CHLA.

ARMC operates accredited residency programs in anesthesia, emergency medicine, family practice, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, psychiatry, and neurology, as well as fellowship programs. Each program has specific requirements as to the numbers and types of patients a resident physician must provide care. To meet these requirements, with respect to the volume and type, it is necessary to provide educational opportunities at other facilities to supplement those available at ARMC.

On January 5, 2021 (Item No. 7), the Board of Supervisors approved the Agreement with CHLA, for ARMC neurology resident physicians to obtain clinical experience in pediatric neurology, for the period of January 5, 2021 through January 4, 2026.

ARMC recommends approval of this Amendment with CHLA to provide for the health and safety of San Bernardino County residents by allowing ARMC’s resident physicians to obtain required clinical experience, specifically in pediatric anesthesia at CHLA to enhance training and improve patient care.

PROCUREMENT

Not Applicable.
