FINANCIAL IMPACT

This item will not result in the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost). The grant award in the amount of $10,000 from Petco Love does not require a local match. Adequate appropriation and revenue have been included in the Department of Public Health’s (DPH) 2024-25 budget and will be included in the recommended 2025-26 budget.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Petco Love was established in 1999 and is a non-profit animal welfare organization associated with Petco, a nationwide business which sells products and services for animals. The mission of Petco Love is to make communities and pet families closer, stronger, and healthier by funding programs which promote pet adoption, reunification of lost pets, disaster relief, and veterinarian care.

DPH recommends approval of the grant award to allow the Animal Care Division to continue providing enhanced medical care to injured or sick shelter pets, which significantly improves their outcomes, ultimately leading to successful placement in adoptable homes. The grant will assist in supplementing the cost associated with enhanced medical care such as surgeries for broken bones, lacerations, amputations, or increased hospitalizations.

On July 24, 2024, pursuant to County Policy 05-13, the County Administrative Office authorized the submission of a grant application to Petco Love Animal Welfare Organization in the amount of $50,000, to provide enhanced medical care to shelter pets.

On April 15, 2025, DPH received grant award notice (Award No. G-2406-55836) from Petco Love, in the amount of $10,000. Petco Love determines grant amounts at its discretion upon evaluation of the grant application, available funding, and the agency’s animal intake volume.
