BACKGROUND INFORMATION
A key component of Arrowhead Regional Medical Center’s (ARMC) mission is to provide education to students in a variety of disciplines. ARMC has a number of agreements with universities and colleges, community colleges, and technical and trade schools to provide on-site training at ARMC for students. This training is necessary for students to obtain their degrees, licenses and or certifications.
The recommended affiliation agreement with SBCC will allow its Health Information Technology and Cancer Information Management students to obtain experiential training in the medical records and coding departments at ARMC. In addition, providing onsite training to students has been shown to be an effective way to recruit potential employees.
The volume and patient mix at ARMC provide a comprehensive educational opportunity to students from SBCC. This affiliation agreement ensures that the students receive training and experience in a hospital setting and gain vital skills that are needed to be part of a competent workforce. The affiliation agreement supports the County’s goal in creating, maintaining, and growing jobs and economic value in the County as it will result in collaborative efforts between the County and its education partners to encourage student exposure to County career pathways and will increase the future pool of healthcare Information Technology specialists.
