FINANCIAL IMPACT

Approval of this item will not result in the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost).

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with El Sol Neighborhood Educational Center (El Sol) is non-financial in nature.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

El Sol is a nonprofit organization with more than 30 years of experience empowering communities in San Bernardino County through education and advocacy, supported by their community health workers (CHWs) who provide leadership and guidance.

The recommended MOU will establish a partnership between the Department of Public Health and El Sol for El Sol’s delivery of a CHW-led program at the Ontario Health Center. The program will focus on improving nutrition literacy, promoting physical activity, and preventing obesity among community members. Topics of education will include nutrition, cooking, and gardening, and each session will include 30 minutes of physical activity. El Sol receives funding from a third party to offer these services without cost to the County.

DPH recommends approval of this MOU with El Sol to improve community health outcomes by increasing access to nutrition education, physical activity opportunities, and programs that foster healthy lifestyles.
