Recommendation
Acting as the governing body of the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District, approve Amendment No. 1 to non-financial Master Student Internship Agreement No. 22-1238 with the Regents of the University of California, on behalf of the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Prehospital Care Paramedic Education Program, to continue providing unpaid work studies and extend the term of the agreement by an additional three years, for a total term of December 6, 2022, through June 30, 2029.

FINANCIAL IMPACT
Approval of Amendment No. 1 (Amendment) will not result in the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost) as the Amendment to Master Student Internship Agreement No. 22-1238 (Agreement) with the Regents of the University of California, on behalf of the University of California, Los Angeles Center for Prehospital Care Paramedic Education Program (UCLA) is a non-financial Agreement.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
San Bernardino County Fire Protection District (SBCFPD) operates an internship program through agreements with schools and institutions whose students seek professional work experience to satisfy academic training requirements.
On December 6, 2022 (Item No. 60), SBCFPD’s Board of Directors approved the Agreement between SBCFPD and UCLA for the period of December 6, 2022, through June 30, 2026. The Agreement allows students to participate in internship and learning opportunities with SBCFPD while gaining hands-on experience in their field of study. The agreement also benefits SBCFPD by supporting its service capabilities and introducing students to potential public safety career opportunities.
Approval of the Amendment will extend the Agreement by an additional three years, for a total contract period through June 30, 2029. This extension will allow UCLA students to continue participating in valuable learning opportunities with SBCFPD without interruption. The Amendment also supports SBCFPD workforce development initiatives and provides a continued pathway for students to gain experience and pursue future public safety careers within the County.
The Agreement may be terminated by either party without cause after 30 days’ advance notice. All other terms of the Agreement remain the same.
