FINANCIAL IMPACT
This item does not impact Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost). The Department of Public Health (DPH) will receive revenue in an aggregate amount of approximately $56,000 for the period of July 14, 2021 through June 30, 2022. Adequate appropriation and revenue have been included in DPH’s 2021-22 budget.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The California Education Code requires that pupils in public schools receive health screening services to identify health conditions that can affect the pupil’s ability to learn and progress. These services include hearing screening, vision screening, scoliosis screening, and nursing consultations. Services also include providing referrals and follow-up services based on screening results and, if needed, consultations and educational services for disease control and immunization concerns.
Under the terms of the recommended agreements, DPH will perform approximately 3,700 screenings collectively at the specified school sites. DPH will receive approximately $56,000 in revenue from the agencies listed in the Recommendation for providing required health screening services. Provision of services is subject to potential limitations or interruption due to COVID-19. DPH will maintain regular contact with the five school districts to schedule/reschedule and conduct screenings consistent with applicable protocols.
DPH is responsible for providing services throughout San Bernardino County aimed at promoting and encouraging healthy lifestyles. Additionally, DPH links people to needed health services that address community health needs and provision of health care when otherwise unavailable. DPH has been providing nursing services in schools for the past 43 years.
