RECOMMENDATION(S)

Recommendation

Authorize the San Bernardino County Library to accept a gift in the amount of $28,479.26 to be used to fund the purchase of digital and physical materials, program supplies and incentives for youth programs, and support the Summer Reading program and the Environmental Learning Center for the Highland Sam J. Racadio Branch Library and Environmental Learning Center.

FINANCIAL IMPACT

Approval of this item will not require the use of Discretionary General Funding (Net County Cost). Approval of budget adjustments to Library’s 2021-22 budget is not requested at this time but may be included on a future budget report presented to the Board of Supervisors (Board) for approval.

 

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Acceptance of the $28,479.26 gift from the Friends of the Highland Sam J. Racadio Library will allow the County Library to utilize funds to purchase digital and physical library materials (such as books, eBooks and audiobooks), supplies for adult and youth library programs (such as craft/art materials or STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program supplies), circulation incentives to promote reading and support the Summer Reading Program by providing additional incentives and performers and supporting the Environmental Learning Center. These materials will result in an enhancement of the customer experience at the Highland Sam J. Racadio Branch Library and Environmental Learning Center. County Policy 06-01 and Standard Practice 06-01SP require Board approval of gifts and donations having a value greater than $10,000.

 

The Friends of the Highland Sam J. Racadio Library, is a non-profit 501-C3 organization that works to raise money from memberships and book sales to help support library programs at the Highland Sam J. Racadio Branch Library and Environmental Learning Center, including but not limited to the purchase of newspaper and magazine subscriptions, DVDs, and incentives for children to reach reading objectives.
